Get Out (Spoilers!)
Get Out is a film directed by Jordan Peele created in 2017. This film is about a man named Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend Rose (Allison Williams) and their experience at her parent's house. Chris and Rose have been dating for a while and decided to go to her parent's house so Chris can meet everybody. Chris is skeptical and nervous because he is black and is nervous about what her parents may think. On the way there they are talking about it when they all of a sudden hit a deer. This is just the first event in a creepy series of events that follow them. When they arrive at the house they are greeted by the groundskeeper, who happens to be black, and then they are greeted at the door by the dad. They then start interrogating Chris asking questions about his habits, and his deceased mother. Chris is noticeably uncomfortable and they keep poking at him and insisting he gets hypnotized by Rose's mom to help him with his bad habits. Later, Chris is awoken during the night and finds himself sitting and talking to Rose's mother. He ends up being hypnotized and waking up thinking it was a dream. The next event that happens is a big party, where everyone is old and white. They start to ask weird questions to Chris and he eventually becomes freaked out and wants to leave. He and Rose escape and go for a walk while the other members of the party play "bingo" where it seems they are auctioning off Chris. Later in the night, we see him and Rose trying to leave the house when instead of looking for the keys, Rose keeps them, showing that she is on the side of her family, and her family begins to tackle Chris and take him in the basement that was previously "off limits". Here Chris awakens with a TV that explains to him what will be happening to him. His brain and consciousness will be replaced with the winner of the auction, an old blind man, who wants to see again. Chris is freaked out and wants to leave. He then finds a way to escape the hypnosis and put fluff in his ears so he can't hear. He then is able to escape and kill both the father, brother, and mother. He is then chased down the road by Rose and her grandfather, who is the groundskeeper, and Chris manages to kill them when he breaks the groundskeeper's hypnosis. Right when he sees police sirens and the situation looks bad for Chris, he realizes it is his best friend Rodney, and the airport TSA agent, who picks him up and gets him out.
I thought the storyline was excellent. This is a perfect movie for those who like being confused and shocked. Although this wasn't my first time seeing this movie, I felt that there was more I noticed and understood after the third time I watched it. This movie does an excellent job with the close-up shots showing Chris' emotions perfectly. And Chris also does an amazing job with keeping eye contact and not blinking to the point where it's chilling. Eye contact is a big part of this movie, especially for the people who were hypnotized and replaced with another person. Eyes are the windows to the soul, and when we see these people's eyes, it is almost like we are looking into who they really are and how bad they are hurting. I especially saw this whenever we looked at Georgina, who was the maid with the grandmother's consciousness. I was also a huge fan of the music choice and the eerie catchy music that was played in the beginning, a couple times during the movie, and at the end. I thought it was the perfect song that captured the creepiness and eeriness the viewers felt during the scenes. In the beginning, it almost sets up the emotions that the viewers should feel for the rest of the movie. I loved the twists and turns in this movie and it always had me guessing what was going to happen next. There are so many details and plot twists that even watching it for the second or third time, they will still catch you off guard. Jordan Peele did an excellent job with this movie, and I also am a big fan of his other films, Us and Nope. Both give the same suspenseful, plot-twist experience.
This was an excellent movie and was one of my favorites. Jordan Peele is one of my favorite directors and I personally love all of his films. I think he really got the suspense, and thriller genre down. He executes them very well and knows how to confuse and shock the viewer. I highly recommend this film, and his others if you are looking for an intense, suspenseful, and thriller-type of movie. I would definitely rate it a 10/10 overall.
