Whiplash (Spoilers!)

Whiplash is a film released in 2014 and was directed by Damien Chazelle. I don't want to give too much of this film away but all I can say is wow. This film stars Miles Teller who plays Andrew and stars J.K. Simmons who plays Fletcher. Andrew is a drummer at a prestigious school when Fletcher, a scary, mean music director, gives him a chance to play with the elite band. Andrew drives himself to no end as he does anything to try and please Fletcher but it never is good enough. The ending was the absolute best part of the movie where Andrew has a big "F U" moment with Fletcher, but within that moment, it wins him over and Fletcher is finally impressed. It only cost Andrew everything to win it.

This movie was absolutely amazing. It was my favorite of the year and I plan to rewatch it a few more times, and then a few more times after that. The color schemes, the facial expressions, and the anxiety you feel through the screen were off the charts. The on-screen tension between the two main characters is also unbelievable and had me watching the whole entire time. Both actors had an incredible performance, especially Fletcher. He was definitely a professor I would not want to have.

This movie had the perfect ending as well. Sometimes an unsatisfying ending can end up ruining the whole movie, but this ending just made the whole movie even better. I thought that it was empowering and I was so glad Andrew made his moment to show Fletcher that he can do what he wanted him to do and more. I also think the side storylines about Andrew's family and social life really allowed us to see what kind of person he was and how big of a hold Fletcher had on him, even when he was on dates with his girlfriend... or ex-girlfriend. I think this movie is something everyone, especially people who have been in a school band before, needs to see. It was absolutely incredible, a 10/10.

  1. WE go to meet Damian Chazelle when he came to Sundance with Whiplash. In our early years, J K Simmons joined us in the Screening Room with Off the Map. He is ALL VOICE and super nice! I'm glad you enjoyed the film! TENSION? OMGosh!
