Marie Antoinette (Spoilers!)

Marie Antoinette is a film directed by Sofia Coppola and created in 2006. The film follows Marie Antoinette (Kirsten Dunst) and her journey to becoming the Queen of France. The movie starts out with Marie Antoinette in her home country, Austria, and talking to her mother about moving to France and getting married to King Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman). Soon after arriving in France, she got married to the soon-to-be king and they were struggling to get used to each other's company. Marie Antoinette, although struggling with her husband, was not struggling with getting accustomed to their lifestyle. She made friends quickly and shopped for jewelry, clothes, shoes, and anything else she wanted. Over time she was getting told she needed to start having kids with King Louis XVI, yet they were still not romantic with each other. After Antoinette's brother talked to King Louis XVI, he realized that he wanted to have kids so they had their first daughter. She then had two more boys. After one of her sons passed, the movie turned dark and sad. Marie Antoinette drove her country of France into debt with all of the spending she had been doing. This then makes the citizens of France turn against her and protest at their home, the Palace of Versailles. The movie ends with them fleeing their home with their two kids because of how dangerous and violent the people of France were becoming.

I thought Marie Antoinette by Sofia Coppola was a great film. I loved the set, costumes, music choice, and overall mise-en-scene.  Sofia Coppola had consistent costuming and color themes. We saw pink and blue mostly, and everything was elegant. The costumes were fancy dresses and updo hairstyles with bows, ribbons, and anything they could imagine. She perfectly captured how I would imagine life would be as a wealthy person in France back then. She also had a great music list which I thought fit the movie perfectly because of how bizarre they were. The songs she chose were heavy 90s rock/pop songs that stood out. She also used many props, almost to the point that it was overwhelming. In certain scenes, we could see mountains of sweet treats, cakes, macarons, cookies, and more. And in other, we could spot hundreds of pairs of shoes and dresses. And there were even scenes with a large amount of dogs! I thought all of these props really showed their wealth and Marie Antoinette's passions/personality.

I really enjoyed this film and would definitely watch it again. There is something about all the props, music choice, and clothing that are very eye-pleasing to me. This film had me all over the place with emotions but I was always entertained. Sometimes I was anxious because she was spending all of their money, sometimes sad because her son passed away, and sometimes I would laugh because of the awkward tension between her and her husband. this is a great film and I thought Sofia Coppola did a great job. I also loved Kirsten Dunst, she is one of my favorites and she did an excellent job in this film.

  1. This is a nice explanation as to why you liked the film. I agree that the dynamic between Marie and Louis was quite amusing that helped to make the film enjoyable. Although, I believe the contrast between Marie and her friends in relation to Marie and those who served higher roles in the palace was interesting too. I wonder, in your opinion, what aspect of Coppola's mise en scene stood out the most in this film.

    1. I think her color scheme really stood out to me as she stayed consistent with the pink and blue throughout the whole film.
