Chapter 5 of Moving Pictures
Chapter 5 of Moving Pictures by Russell Leigh Sharman made in 2020, talks about cinematography, lighting, and framing. Cinematography is the art of making films and movies. There is a lot that goes into good cinematography and being a good cinematographer. Things such as having a good eye for detail and the usage of lighting are both things that make a good cinematographer. It also takes things off screen such as communication with others and management skills. Being a cinematographer requires talent and skill related to movie and film production because in order to make a good film, you need to know what you're doing. The cinematographer can also be referred to as the director of photography and their job is to usually translate the director's vision into footage that will be usable for the film. There are also many other skilled jobs that are required in order to produce a successful film. Some of these jobs include camera assistants, focus pullers, digital imaging technicians, film loaders, and more. All of these people have specific jobs that are super important in creating a good film.
This chapter also includes information on the decision to film in black and white or color. This used to not be a decision because films used to only be in black and white, however, with technological advances and with time we were able to film using color. Although we currently see most if not all modern films use color, it is still a decision the director has to make because there may be a time when black and white may suit the movie better. In modern times, the usage of black and white might suit the movie better especially if the film is dated back.
This chapter also tells us about the different lighting techniques and why they are important. Lighting is one of the most important things in a film which is why it has to be done correctly. Without the use of light, people would not be able to create films. There are four properties of light that should be learned in order to understand lighting. They are, direction, quality, source, and color. Lighting is important in films because it helps create a mood and sense of understanding of the film. It allows the viewer to see but also when used right, doesn't show things that aren't meant to be shown. For example, when seeing someone for the first time stye might cast a shadow over their face to cause suspense. Lighting tells the audience many things and is a valued part of creating a film.
