Don't Look Up (Spoilers!)
Don't look up, a film made by Adam McKay in 2021. This film follows astronomer Dr Randall, Leonardo DiCaprio, and his student Kate, Jennifer Lawrence, as they discover an asteroid that is headed to Earth and wipe out everyone. This thriller and comedy has many famous actors including Jonah Hill, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Ariana Grande, and more. The film starts out by showing us Kate's discovery of the asteroid and the next steps in telling the government about it. They have a hard time getting this information to the president, Meryl Streep, as she cares only about money and her image. With nothing getting done, they decide to go on a news show and tell the public themselves, where of course, many people don't believe them. With the spread of this information, the rest of the movie is about the government being chaotic and telling people to "don't look up". The people are then furious with the government after the comet is visibly seen in the sky hurdling towards Earth. The end of the movie shows Leonardo DiCaprio back at home with his wife and sons, along with Kate and her new boyfriend, Yule. They are eating dinner when the comet hits Earth and everyone is wiped out. Except for the president and a select few who bought a ticket for a spaceship to find a different planet.
I thought this was a very good movie. I enjoyed the comedic relief after stressful situations, especially the comments between Jennifer Lawrence, who played Kate, and Jonah Hill, who played the president's son. I thought the movie was very serious, especially when Leonardo DiCaprio was on screen, and when he wasn't, it was a little more laid-back and raunchy. It was hard to gauge what the viewer should be feeling and at some times was hard to determine if this movie was supposed to be a thriller or a comedy. I also thought the role Ariana Grande played was funny. she played a pop star who had broken up with her boyfriend and was on the news segment before the scientists were about to tell everyone the world was going to end. I think that it tried to show what we, as viewers, want to watch rather than what we should watch. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie and it was my second time watching it. I would definitely watch it again in a few years because I think it will become one of those movies that will give a sense of nostalgia especially because it was a movie made during the Covid times, and kind of has the same message of "something life-changing is going to happen".
I think a big part of this film that sticks out to me is the end scene where it shows the earth being hit by the comet and the effects that come after. We see volcanoes erupting, and tsunamis happening, and we watch as this comet strips life away from our planet. It definitely stuck with me as it too accurately shows what could happen if our planet was struck by an asteroid. It also shocked me how some people reacted and made me question how I would react and how I would choose to spend my last months of life on earth. This movie is very good and has lots of star actors that really bring life to the film.
